Think Beyond the Bin
As we adjust to the changes that 2020 has brought about, it’s quite clear businesses are in need of some type of recovery. Whether that be economic, environmental, or even emotional, managing our current resources is now more important than ever before.
With National Recycling Week upon us, it’s clear that our practices need to reflect an attitude whereby we fight for a future that goes beyond the bin. That means we are ensuring sustainable practices and minimising overall consumption. As climate change measures and hazardous environmental processes gain momentum, society needs to actively play their part in this cause for change.
Currently, in Australia, Federal, State, and Local Governments are in agreement to deliver the first-ever National Waste Policy Action Plan, which will seek greater investment in recycling infrastructure, implementation of waste export bans, and investment into product stewardship schemes. For Businesses, acknowledging this shift comes in the design phases of products and ensuring that they are environmentally friendly and focused. This includes solutions that minimise the use of materials, ensure components are recyclable, and promote healthy environmental change.
Outlined by Planet Ark, there are six ways we can all personal transition to a future beyond the bin. These include:
- Reducing Resource Use – buying less, choosing to reuses, and passing items on.
- Challenge Food Waste – make a list before shopping, plan ahead, and start practicing composting.
- Shift Package Use – refuse single-use plastic, buy in bulk, and check how to dispose of items before you chuck them away.
- Share Tools and Resources – share resources rather than buying new for collaborative consumption (borrow, swap, and share).
- Treasure your Technology – reduce electronic waste by repairing, buying pre-loved, and recycling the right way.
- Champion Sustainability – support those taking real action, inspire your workplace, and support the circular economy.
Companies can have a positive impact on the environment if they make small changes in how they use and dispose of materials. For instance, our Waste Management solutions provide efficient and environmentally friendly ways to ensure your meeting environmental safety standards.
Review your work processes and see what difference you can take. Any business can lead innovation if they take responsibility for their products and waste and commit towards a brighter, and greener, future.
National Recycling Week was founded by Planet Ark in 1996 with the mission to bring national focus to the environmental benefits of recycling. It runs from Monday 9 November until Sunday 15 November 2020.
